Lytham Tour

gte logo smallArrive at Royal Lytham from the antiquated train station which sits at the back of the 9th green and it is not immediately obvious that you are entering one of the best courses in the country.

However, it quickly becomes apparent why Lytham is one of England’s most cherished links. Your first sight will be the seven bunkers which surround the putting surface at the par 3, and this is symptomatic of a course that has 200 sand traps to negotiate. An 11-time Open host venue, Lytham is the only one of the collection to start with a par 3.

Driving the ball accurately  is a prerequisite to scoring well and also to gaining maximum enjoyment of a round here. The wild hitter will find it a draining experience because finding sand is a proper penalty. Sometimes, you are genuinely relieved just to be able to escape sideways! So, yes, Lytham is a difficult challenge, but it also offers the chance to follow in the footsteps of some of the venue’s great champions, including Bobby Jones, Seve Ballesteros and, most recently, Ernie Els.

There are also a number of other great courses close by, so you can maximise playing time on a trip to the area. One must-visit is Fairhaven, a links/parkland hybrid located just minutes from Royal Lytham.

This picturesque course is built on the same sandy soil that characterises the best links courses, but is flatter and more forgiving than some of the region’s other championship tracks. The James Braid creation is also used as a qualifying venue when top tournaments like the Open and Women’s British Open visit Royal Lytham.

Again, as at Royal Lytham, one glance down the 1st is all you need to know you are at a proper links.

Founded in 1901, St Annes Old Links is one of the fine championship links of England’s north west coast and hosted the Local Final Qualifying for The Open in July 2012 held at nearby Royal Lytham & St Annes, the Ladies' Golf Union Girl’s Home International Matches in August 2013 and the English Women's Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship in August 2015.

The signature 9th hole was voted by Golf World in the May 2010 issue as the Top 9th Hole in Great Britain and Ireland. The great Bobby Jones is quoted as saying "it's difficult to see how you could improve on this". Enough  said!

Like all great links, the course is designed to test your patience and resilience so whether you are a budding professional or an enthusiastic beginner, we look forward to your visit.

Lytham Green Drive Golf Club is situated on the beautiful Fylde Coast in the lovely resort of Lytham in the North West of England and had the honour of being an Open qualifying course in 1974, 1979 and 1988.

The club, founded in 1913, is an easy walking pleasant 'Parkland Course' with no strenuous hills, although buggies and pull trolleys are available for hire if needed. The course is ideal for all handicaps as it is particularly testing with rewards for the more venturous player but has allowances for shots by those of less ability. Our Half-Way House is always stocked with a range of hot and cold refreshments and quick snacks to prepare you for the tougher back nine.

'Lytham Green Drive' has a reputation as probably the friendliest and most sociable golf club on the Fylde. This reputation is gained over many years by feedback from visitors and guests alike. You can be assured that a warm welcome and friendly atmosphere awaits you before and after the perfect round of golf
